Leis Farms Inc. of Togo Saskatchewan has been announced the winner of the Hudye Soil Services 2010 “King of Canola Challenge”, achieving a yield of 67.22 bushels per acre on their farm in North East Saskatchewan, Canada. The “King of Canola Challenge” in its 4th year provides an opportunity for local producers to employ any management strategy they see fit in order to obtain the highest canola yield possible. This includes, but is not limited to, genetics, seed treatments, chemistries, enhanced fertility with the use of micro nutrients, fungicides, and enhanced technologies and practices. The winners are awarded a $5,000 travel voucher to be used for their destination of choice. Out of the 7 producers that participated in the 2010 challenge Leis Farms Inc. recorded the top yield of 67.22 bushels per acre. Even though Leis Farms Inc. won the challenge, all of the participants won in the “big picture”. With the Saskatchewan Provincial Canola average at just 34.7 bushels per acre, these 7 producers proved to the rest of the province that higher canola yields are very possible which in turn reduces the per bushel cost of production, a concept continually strived for in the 11 year running “Field of Dreams” project. Despite all of the challenges that “Mother Nature” presented during the 2010 growing season these 7 producers proved once again that Maximizing their Productivity in order to reduce their production cost per bushel is a very viable and financially rewarding practice.
