Field of Dreams
The "Maximizing for the Millenium Crop Management Project" was initiated in 1999 with the objective of acheiving yields that would break through pre-existing notions of what wheat and canola crops should yield on the prairies.
Hudye Soil Services Inc. partnered up with Yorkton Distributors, Monsanto, Dekalb, Bayer Crop Science - Interag, Hudye Farms Inc., Agri-Trend Agrology to make the Dream a reality. By targeting yields above and beyond the "average", the partners expected to drive down their unit cost of production.
The whole concept came from a simple, but very important fact; Farmers sell bushels, not acres. So, why is the focus on expense always referred to in terms of cost/acre instead of cost/bushel Fixed costs such as land, equipment and labour are the same whether a conventional or an intensive cropping system is used. There is, of course, an increase in the variable costs - fertilizer and weed, disease and insect control - but can the yield increase outweigh these costs? Armed with the latest in seed genetics and crop production technology the crop partnership set out to find the answer.
The demonstration is done on a large scale, with two quarter sections dedicated to both wheat and canola. By conducting the trials on a grand scale the results are more representative of a farm operation than a standard test plot. The project has seen some very positive results and some important lessons have been learned. Heading into its 11th year, Hudye Soil Services, Yorkton Distributors, Bayer/Interag, Monsanto and Hudye Farms are still producing valuable information and ideas for producers everywhere. The results from each year of the Field of Dreams project are shown on the page links at the top of this page.
