Danbury farm wins King of Canola Challenge!!
Recording a yield of 67.1 bushels to the acre, a Danbury canola grower was named winner of the second annual King of Canola Challenge.
Don, Lynden and Sheldon Krywy of Krywy Farms located near Danbury were named the winners of the contest conducted by Hudye Soil Services. They accomplished the feat by growing Invigor 8440 canola.
The contest was open exclusively to customer who purchased all crop inputs for the selected King of Canola field at any of the three Hudye Soil Services retail locations, and nine producers took up the challenge, out of the 9 contestants 6 of them recorded yields of above 50 bushels/acre.
The Krywys were rewarded for their efforts with a travel voucher, which was presented to them on December 19 by members of the Hudye Soils team: Ben Hudye, president; Braden Hudye, sales manager, and Harvey Prokop, grain marketing leader.
In the contest, entrants were permitted to employ any management strategy they saw fit in order to obtain the highest yield, according to a release from Hudye Soil Services. This included, but was not limited to enhanced fertility programs, micronutrients, foliar feeding, fungicide application in the form of foliar/seed treatment and seed inoculants.
A Hudye Soil Services agri-coach was present at the time of harvest for each contestant to judge a straight swath that had to be a minimum of one acre, the release said. The agri-coach measured the plot, swath length, width, amount of dockage and moisture in order to determine net yield.
This is a great challenge to push the envelope in terms of maximizing productivity in return lowering unit cost of production, the release said.
Krywy Farms also received the award for “best-in-class wheat” through the Syngenta Cereal Challenge conducted by Hudye Soil Services and Yorkton distributors.
The Syngenta Cereal Challenge is a contest run in the Yorkton/Norquay and surrounding areas with a large number of farming operations who participated. The goal of the contest is to use Syngenta products along with sound agronomy to minimize disease pressure in the cereal crops of wheat, barley, and oats.
Krywy’s submitted their wheat sample and it was awarded “best in class Wheat”
Krywy Farms continues to practice intensive farm management in their area and the results continue to show positive when it comes to increased productivity and grain growing practices.
