2009 King of Canola Challenge - A HUGE SUCCESS!!  02/03/10 7:20:09 PM Printer Friendly VersionPrinter Friendly Version

Danbury farmers reach a record 78.19 bu/ac Canola Yield!!

Krywy Farms of Danbury Saskatchewan have been announced the winners of the Hudye Soil Services 2009 “King of Canola Challenge”, Achieving a yield of 78.19 bushels per acre on their farm in North East Saskatchewan, Canada.  Shown below, Don Krywy accepting the award, the second year in a row, on behalf of Krywy Farms from Vice-President and Sales Manager of Hudye Soil Services Inc.

The “King of Canola Challenge”, in its 3rd year, provides an opportunity for local producers to employ any management strategy they see fit in order to obtain the highest canola yield possible.  This includes, but is not limited to, genetics, seed treatments, chemistries, enhanced fertility with the use of micro nutrients, fungicides, and enhanced technologies and practices. The winners are awarded a $5,000 travel voucher to be used for their destination of choice.

Out of the 7 producers that participated in the 2009 challenge, Krywys recorded the top yield of 78.19 bushels per acre, the next three producers recorded yields in the high 60 bushels per acre range and the three others in the high 50 bushels per acre range. Even though Krywy’s won the challenge, all of the participants won in the “big picture”. With the Saskatchewan Provincial Canola average at just 34.7 bushels per acre, these 7 producers proved to the rest of the province that higher canola yields are very possible which in turn reduces the per bushel cost of production, a concept continually strived for in the 11 year running “Field of Dreams” project.

Despite all of the challenges that “Mother Nature” presented during the 2009 growing season these 7 producers proved once again that Maximizing their Productivity in order to reduce their production cost per bushel is a very viable and financially rewarding practice.
